Complex choices.
Clearer paths.
We combine research, strategic foresight, AI and rapid prototyping to help organisations find their next best move.
We do not predict one certain future. We help you prepare for several possible ones.
When the map no longer matches the territory.
Technology, climate, regulation, behaviour and markets can change faster than conventional plans. A* Labs helps organisations reassess where they are, where they need to go and which route is most resilient.
The A* Decision Map
A visual and interactive decision product showing the intended destination, available routes, hidden dependencies, and conditions that would justify changing course.
What we create
Decision Maps
See the full choice, including known costs and hidden dependencies, before committing resources.
Scenario Systems
Explore what changes under different future conditions and test your assumptions.
Signal Radars
Track early signs, behavioural shifts, and data trends that affect your strategy.
Working Prototypes
Test an idea, workflow, or AI integration safely before investing in a complete system.
Resilience Playbooks
Prepare actions for disruption, uncertainty, and rapidly changing conditions.
The A* Method
The name A* comes from the foundational pathfinding algorithm designed to find a minimum-cost route toward a goal. We apply this logic to human decisions: using available knowledge to map, test, and guide the search for the best path forward.
01. Map
Define the real decision, objective, constraints, stakeholders and unknowns. We establish the Destination (what outcome actually matters?) and the Terrain (what forces shape the problem?).
02. Explore
Research signals, trends, risks, opportunities and alternative futures. We identify the realistic Routes available to reach the destination.
03. Test
Use scenarios, prototypes and structured AI analysis to test assumptions. We calculate the Cost (what does each path require or risk?) and apply a Heuristic (what available knowledge helps guide the next move?).
04. Choose & Build
Compare paths and identify the most credible next move. Then, we create the guide, workflow, digital product or communication tool needed to put the decision into practice. Finally, we establish Recalculation triggers: what signals would tell us to change course?
Tangible Deliverables
Clients do not receive another vague strategy presentation. They receive something they can use to navigate complex change.
The A* Decision Map
A visual and interactive decision product mapping the entire ecosystem of a choice.
What it shows:
- The intended destination
- Available routes and known costs
- Hidden dependencies and obstacles
- Reversible vs. irreversible choices
- Recommended next steps
How it is delivered:
- Interactive webpage or live dashboard
- A visual report
- A facilitated workshop
- A working prototype

How the A* method translates into practical clarity for different types of organisations.
Summer Water Shortages
"How should we prepare?"
A* Labs produces: A situation map, stakeholder research, plausible scenarios, intervention options, a public communication prototype, and indicators showing when strategy must change.
Digital Investment
"App vs. Digital Guide?"
A* Labs produces: A comparison of audience behaviour, maintenance costs, distribution, and revenue opportunities. We then build a small prototype before the organisation commits to the full investment.
AI Implementation
"Where should AI actually be used?"
A* Labs produces: A map of repetitive work, information bottlenecks, data sensitivity, and security risks. We identify one or two sensible experiments rather than recommending AI everywhere.
About A* Labs
We are a decision-pathfinding studio.
We help organisations understand complex change, explore possible futures and turn difficult decisions into clear, testable paths forward.
We are not another company that just "does AI." We sit between strategic research, scenario planning, decision design, and rapid prototyping. The product is not technology itself. The product is a clearer path forward.
Security is not an extra feature.
A product is not truly useful if people cannot trust it. Privacy, security, accessibility and resilience must be considered from the beginning—not added after launch.
Our Voice & Stance
- We test assumptions before building systems.
- We explain what the technology can do—and what it cannot.
- Every experiment begins with a real problem.
- Useful is better than impressive.
